Aluminium Cladding Respray: Preparation, Primer and Finish

Aluminium cladding needs different preparation from steel — no rust, but an oxide layer that defeats the wrong primer. What an aluminium respray involves, why adhesion is the whole job, and how it compares with replacement or powder coating.

Aluminium Cladding Respray: Preparation, Primer and Finish

Aluminium cladding ages differently from steel. It does not rust, so buildings clad in aluminium panels or rainscreen often look sound long after the finish has actually given up: the factory coating chalks, colour flattens and fades unevenly across elevations, and a powder-coated finish that was crisp on day one goes dull and patchy. The panels are fine. The coating is not — and that is a respray, not a replacement.

Why Aluminium Is a Different Job from Steel

On steel cladding the enemy is corrosion, and the work is dominated by treating rust and cut edges. Aluminium has no rust problem — it has an adhesion problem. Aluminium forms a hard oxide layer on its surface almost immediately, and that layer, along with any residual mould release, chalk or atmospheric salt, will defeat a coating that was not specified for it. A finish that peels off aluminium in sheets was almost always applied over an oxide layer that should have been dealt with first.

Preparation and Primer: the Whole Job

On aluminium, preparation is not the prelude to the work — it is the work:

  • Wash down and degrease to remove chalk, atmospheric salts, grime and any residue on the panel face.
  • Abrade or key the surface to break through the oxide layer and give the primer something to grip.
  • Apply an etch or adhesion primer specified for aluminium — not a general metal primer.
  • Treat galvanic and dissimilar-metal details at fixings and junctions, where aluminium meets steel.
  • Mask and protect glazing, seals and adjacent finishes before any topcoat is applied.

The topcoat is then spray-applied for an even, factory-grade film with no brush marks or runs, in a full sheen and colour of your choosing. On rainscreen and panel systems the joints and reveals are picked up so the finish reads as consistent across the elevation rather than stopping at the easy areas.

Respray or Powder Coat?

Powder coating is a factory process — the panel has to come off the building, go to a plant, be stripped, coated and cured, then come back. For a handful of components that can make sense. For a clad elevation it means dismantling, transport, downtime and a bill that dwarfs the coating. On-site spraying delivers the same appearance with the panels still on the building. Respray or Replace?

Where the panels are sound and only the finish has failed — which is the usual case with aluminium — respraying restores the elevation for a fraction of the cost of re-cladding, in days rather than weeks, without scaffolding the building for a month or taking it out of use. Colour, Finish and Brand Matching

Any RAL or BS colour is available in matt or satin, and brand colours are matched exactly for retail and logistics buildings where the elevation is part of the identity. Anthracite grey remains the default on modern aluminium, but a respray is also the cheapest way to change colour outright — the same logic that drives aluminium shop front colour changes on a smaller scale.

Can aluminium cladding be resprayed?

Yes, and it takes a sprayed finish very well provided the preparation is right. Aluminium forms an oxide layer that has to be keyed and treated with an etch or adhesion primer specified for aluminium; over that, the topcoat holds extremely well.

Why does paint peel off aluminium?

Almost always because it was applied over the oxide layer, or over chalk, salt or grease on the panel face, without the correct adhesion primer. It is a preparation and specification failure rather than a topcoat failure, and it is why aluminium needs a different process from steel.

Is respraying cheaper than replacing aluminium cladding?

Substantially, where the panels are sound. Re-cladding means new panels, fixings, extended access and weeks of programme. A respray restores the elevation in days, on the building, at a fraction of the cost — and only the finish had failed in the first place.

Can you respray powder-coated aluminium?

Yes. Faded or chalked powder-coated panels are a common respray job. The powder-coated surface is degreased and keyed and an adhesion primer is applied before the new topcoat, which avoids stripping panels off the building and sending them to a plant.
