What Powder Coating Is

Powder coating is a factory process. Dry powder is applied electrostatically to a metal component and then baked in an oven at around 200°C, where it melts and fuses into a hard, even finish. It is an excellent factory finish for new aluminium and steel — but the two requirements are unavoidable: the item has to be bare or specially prepared metal, and it has to fit inside an oven. That means removing the component from the building and taking it to a coating plant.

What On-Site Spray Painting Is

On-site spraying uses specialist liquid coatings applied by hand-held spray gun, in place, on the building. The frames, cladding or shutters stay exactly where they are — masked, prepared, primed and sprayed on-site — and cure in the air rather than an oven.
