Composite vs Metal Cladding Spraying: What’s Different

2 June 2026Newlook Protective Coatings

How spraying differs for composite and metal cladding: preparation, corrosion, coatings, and what it means for cost and results on commercial buildings.

Two Materials, Two Approaches

Most commercial elevations are clad in either composite panels or profiled metal, and cladding spraying is tailored to each. The coating systems and preparation differ, even though the on-site, no-replacement principle is the same.

Metal Cladding

Profiled steel and aluminium cladding is durable but prone to cut-edge corrosion, where rust creeps back from exposed edges. Treating that corrosion is central to a lasting respray — see our guide to cut-edge corrosion treatment. We use anti-corrosion primers and topcoats built for metal.

Composite and Architectural Panels

Composite and architectural panels (such as ACM and similar systems) are less prone to corrosion but need careful cleaning, decontamination, and the right primer to bond to the factory finish. The focus is adhesion, colour match, and an even sheen across large flat panels.

What Stays the Same

  • Work is done on site, with no panels removed
  • Elevations are masked, prepared, and sprayed in controlled passes
  • Far lower cost and disruption than full re-cladding
  • A written guarantee on qualifying projects

Cost Implications

Both are priced per square metre plus condition and access, but metal with significant corrosion needs more preparation time. Our cladding costs vs replacement guide explains the ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether my cladding is composite or metal?

We identify the panel type and condition at survey and recommend the correct coating system. You do not need to know in advance.

Is one type harder to spray than the other?

Neither is harder as such, but metal with cut-edge corrosion needs more preparation, while composite panels need careful adhesion testing and cleaning.

Can both be recoloured completely?

Yes. Both composite and metal cladding can be fully recoloured to any RAL or brand specification with an even, durable finish.

Need On-Site Cladding Respray?
