How to Choose a Commercial Coating Contractor in Hampshire

16 December 2025Newlook Protective Coatings

What to look for when choosing a commercial coating contractor in Hampshire, from accreditations and insurance to site management and aftercare.

Not All Coating Contractors Are the Same

The protective coatings market in Hampshire ranges from sole traders with a spray gun to fully accredited specialist contractors. If you are responsible for a commercial property or structure, choosing the right contractor directly affects the quality, durability, and guarantee of the finished work. Here is what to look for.

Accreditations and Quality Systems

At a minimum, your contractor should hold:

  • ISO 9001 quality management certification — this demonstrates documented processes for quoting, planning, and delivering work to a consistent standard.
  • CSCS cards for all operatives — required for access to most commercial and construction sites.
  • Product-specific training — the coatings manufacturer should have trained and approved the contractor to apply their systems.

For specialist work such as intumescent fire protection, look for additional accreditations such as FIRAS or IFC Certification.

Insurance and Guarantees

  • Public liability insurance — a minimum of £5 million is standard for commercial work. Ask for a copy of the certificate.
  • Employers liability insurance — a legal requirement if the contractor has employees.
  • Written guarantee — a reputable contractor will provide a written guarantee on materials and workmanship, typically 5–10 years depending on the system.

Site Management and Safety

Ask how the contractor manages site operations:

  • Do they provide method statements and risk assessments (RAMS) specific to your site?
  • How do they manage overspray and containment?
  • What is their approach to waste management and environmental protection?
  • Can they work around your operational hours and access requirements?

Portfolio and References

A good contractor will be happy to show you completed projects similar to yours. Ask for references from facilities managers or main contractors you can speak with. Look for experience with your type of building or structure, whether that is cladding, steelwork, UPVC, or industrial plant.

Getting Quotes

Request at least three written quotations based on the same specification. A detailed quotation should clearly state the coating system, surface preparation method, number of coats, expected coverage, and any exclusions. Be cautious of quotations that are significantly below the others — they may be cutting corners on preparation or using cheaper materials.
