Why Colour Accuracy Matters in Rail

A train’s livery is a brand identity on wheels. When a single vehicle in a fleet has a visible colour mismatch — whether from a panel repair, cab-end respray, or partial relivery — it undermines the operator’s brand image and can trigger complaints from franchise stakeholders. Achieving a precise colour match requires more than just ordering paint to a RAL or BS number. It demands an understanding of how colours behave on large, curved surfaces exposed to years of weathering.

The Colour-Matching Process

Professional livery colour matching follows a structured process:

• Reference standard — every train operator has a livery specification that defines the official colours, usually by RAL, BS, or proprietary paint code. This is the starting point, but it rarely tells the whole story.
• Spectrophotometer reading — a handheld spectrophotometer measures the actual colour of the existing paintwork on the vehicle. This captures the colour as it is now, accounting for UV fading, weathering, and any previous colour variation from earlier repaints.
• Batch mixing — the paint supplier mixes a batch to match the spectrophotometer reading rather than the original specification. This ensures the new paint blends with the existing finish rather than standing out as a different shade of the same nominal colour.
• Spray-out card — before application, a test spray-out card is produced and checked against the vehicle in daylight conditions. Paint can look different under workshop fluorescent lighting versus natural daylight, so this step catches mismatches before any paint touches the vehicle.

Weathering and Fading

A fleet that entered service in the same livery five or ten years ago will not look uniform today. South-facing bodysides fade faster than north-facing ones. Roof panels bleach and chalk from UV exposure. Cab fronts accumulate stone chip repairs that may have been colour-matched at different times. Understanding these variations is essential when planning a partial repaint or spot repair.

The practical solution is to blend the new paint into the surrounding area rather than painting to a hard edge. Blending creates a gradual transition that is invisible to the eye, even if the new paint is fractionally different from the weathered original. This technique requires skilled operatives and careful masking.

Metallic and Pearlescent Finishes

Some modern liveries use metallic or pearlescent finishes that are particularly challenging to match. These paints contain aluminium flakes (metallic) or mica particles (pearlescent) that reflect light at different angles, creating a colour that changes depending on the viewing angle. Matching these finishes requires:

• Multi-angle spectrophotometry — measurements at 15°, 45°, and 110° to capture the face, flop, and specular colour values.
• Controlled spray technique — the spray pattern, distance, and number of passes must be consistent to align the metallic or mica flakes in the same orientation as the original finish. Variations in technique create visible differences in flake orientation that appear as colour variation.

Brand Compliance and Sign-Off

For franchised operators, the livery must comply with the franchise agreement’s brand standards. Some operators require formal sign-off of colour matches before application, using physical colour swatches assessed under controlled lighting conditions (typically a D65 daylight light booth).
